What is Double Disc Grinding?

What is Double Disc Grinding?

Double or Dual Disc Grinding is a highly efficient method of removing equal stock from opposing faces of a part, normally symmetrical stock removal. The Double Disc Grinding process will also produce the highest level of Flatness and Parallelism on opposing surfaces.

With Disc Grinding the grinding is done using the face of the grinding wheel where with cylindrical grinding you are using the diameter of the grinding wheel.

Generally, Double Disc Grinding is used for high productivity, however production rates can vary greatly from over 40,000 parts per hour to just a few parts per hour depending on the disc grinders tooling configuration, part size, material, and stock removal.

Here are a few points to consider when deciding if Double Disc Grinding may be a good fit for your application.

Rotary Carrier Grinding Machine Tooling
  • The part needs to have a somewhat equal surface area on the opposing surfaces.
  • The size of the part needs to be in relation to the size of the grinding wheels being used.
  • The part’s overall length/diameter to the width needs to be within a relationship.
  • The part thickness characteristics need to be in relation to the opposing face being ground

If you are unsure of the best process for the part you need ground, please reach out to one of our Grinding Experts and we would be more than happy to complete an analysis of your process, part, volume, metal, stock removal and any other pertinent criteria to provide the most effective and efficient grinding solution.

Specialty Grinder for Large Non-Coplanar Connecting Rods

Specialty Grinder for Large Non-Coplanar Connecting Rods

C & B Machinery of Brighton, Michigan has received an order from a major North American manufacturer of large construction and mining equipment to supply a specialty grinder for grinding the parallel faces of very large connecting rods.  To meet the customer’s quality and volume requirement’s C & B will be building a virtually new grinder utilizing a Mattison 100C-5 base machine pulled from C & B’s warehouse of over 40 similar grinding machines.

Our remanufacturing process will bring this grinder to 2019 technology standards and designs. Applying servo-controlled ball screw feeds on all (5) five vertical grinding spindles, position tracking on the rotary table to aid the new robotic load automation.  A touch screen mobile pendant will give the operator a simple operation of the grinder with its new (5) axis Allen Bradly safety integrated controls system.    Post process gauging will feedback to the AB control system to maintain consistent stock removal and final size at each grinding spindle.

The tooling design will accommodate two different customer connecting rods without any changeover. Both connecting rods are over 21” (548mm) long and are non-coplanar meaning the crank thickness is different from the pin thickness as well the pin is non-symmetrical.  The grinder will also have the ability to exceed the customer’s volume requirements if needed.

C&B Machinery Expands the Models and Features Available on Its Line of CBV Series Clamp Bore Grinders.

C&B Machinery Expands the Models and Features Available on Its Line of CBV Series Clamp Bore Grinders.

C&B Machinery’s lineup of Vertical Clamp Bore micro-finishing grinders has been expanded yet again! C&B continues to strive to be an industry leader in meeting customers’ ever-growing needs for flexibility, throughput volumes, integration with plant automation, and maximizing perishable tooling life.

Our single spindle models can be an economical choice for lower volumes and lower tooling costs.  Our double spindle models work well for applications where different work holding at each station has advantages and volumes are a bit higher.  To the other extreme, our rotary index models can offer tooling flexibility and the very highest level of throughput.

We now offer a higher-speed grinding spindle option to maximize efficiency for customers using CBN grinding wheels vs. conventional free-cutting, self-dressing vitrified wheels.

The CBV Series offers multiple part handling options including operator hand load/unload, robotics integration (Fanuc Authorized Integrator), gantry load/unload with part flipping capabilities, and in-process gauging with load pre-check for stock and runout.  The gauge fixture is designed for quick adjustments with no tools required. Software is designed for control of stock removal on each side and part orientation entering or exiting the cell. Error proofing for part load and part type can also be designed into this system.
